Microchipping Your
Pet
Does your pet ever take himself for a walk? As he or she ever slipped a collar?
The ResQ microchip is a tiny microchip containing a one-of-a-kind identification number. The size of a piece of rice, this chip is inserted using a hypodermic needle in much the same way vaccinations are routinely given to your pet. This simple procedure can be done at any time, even during a yearly exam.
Once in place, the ResQ microchip allows immediate identification of your pet using a scanner. These scanners are used nationwide by animal shelters, dog control officers and animal hospitals. By passing the scanner over the area where microchips are placed (between the shoulder blades in dogs and cats) the unique identification number is read out on the screen in seconds. The owner of the animal can be located using this identification number.
ResQ microchip are registered in a nationwide registry called PetLink.net. This registry is operated by recovery specialists using a toll-free number 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. PetLink.net provides free lifetime updates of your contact information and free 24/7 support for pets and owners. One call to this registry provides owner identification so that you can be contacted immediately and reunited with your pet without delay. The registry also allows designation of an alternate person to be contacted in your absence. A backup registry is maintained in New York State at the New York State Veterinary Medical Society headquarters.
The identification number in each ResQ microchip is unique and can never be altered. Unlike collars and tags, the microchip cannot be removed or lost.
ResQ microchips are ISO (International Organization for Standardization) microchips for companion animals. They work like your bank card. Just like you can withdraw money from any ATM in the world, any ISO compliant reader for companion animals can read these microchips.
Microchip identification is the perfect solution for cats that go outdoors since placing a collar on outdoor cats can be dangerous should they become entangled.
Animals with health problems such as diabetes, seizure disorders, or heart problems should have microchips implanted so that they can be rapidly reunited with their owners in case they get separated. Such medical problems can be life-threatening if medications are missed, and so it is critical that these animals not be left in a shelter or other facility for even short periods of time.
Other forms of identification are not as reliable. Tattoos can blur over time, can be altered and duplicate numbers can exist.
